Easy frozen treats for horses

The perfect recipe for hot summer days

I love summer! You won’t hear a peep out of me about it being too hot. I live by the theory that sweat is good for the soul. I have a feeling the horses on the other hand would much rather opt for cooler weather. Even in the shade they’ve been sweating just standing still and are getting pretty drained, especially the older ones. I wanted to come up with something refreshing for them to catch a break from the heat so I set out to create the perfect horse popsicles.

Healthy horse popsicles are very adaptable depending upon your horses dietary needs and the recipe can made a couple of different ways for horses that like to play with their food 😉

Basically you’ll be freezing your horses favorite foods into a bucket of water to create a giant frozen treat. I made one version that is layered with three different fruits and veggies and one that is blended more like a smoothie that gets frozen solid. I’ve compiled a lift of 50 healthy foods horses can eat to give you some ideas of things you can add to their frosty treats, check it out here

Layered Horse Popsicle Recipe

Layered treats can be made in any freezer safe container. I chose to use medium sized containers that hold about 40 fl oz so I could make a few different types of treats at the same time without running out of freezer space. Ice cream buckets work great too.

Pick out a combo of fruits and veggies that your horses love (pears, carrots, and strawberries are some of the favorites around here). Chop them up into large slices.

Then put a layer of fruit/veggies in the bottom of the freezer container. Next add a layer of ice. Repeat the layering ice/fruit till the whole container if filled. Using layers with ice prevents the fruits from all floating up to get frozen on one end, it also makes it freeze faster.

After all your layering is done fill the bucket with water to the top. Put the lid on and freeze till it’s solid.

Keep the frozen treat in the container till you’re ready to give it to the horses then flip it out and have fun watching them figure it out.

Blended Horse Popsicle Recipe

Blended horse popsicles turn out more like a lick-it style treat. The horses get to enjoy licking their way through the whole thing rather than just chomping out the goodies.

In this version I used kale, kiwi, apples, and sea salt to help the horses replenish some of their electrolytes.

Toss all your fruits and veggies in the blender with 2 cups of water. Blend it till smooth. Then add enough water to make it fill your container and blend it again till evenly combined. Pour it into your freezer safe container and freeze solid.

You can also add a twine or rope to it before freezing it so that you can hang it up for your horses. I tied cotton ribbon around the lid and let the tails fall inside so they would freeze right into it.
