Show those big hearts some love with these DIY Omega Hearts Horse Treats

All Natural, Healthy, and Easy to make

I wanted to show my horse a little extra love by making her some treats that were tasty, natural, and beneficial. After looking through horse treat recipes for an unreasonable amount of time and not finding the perfect healthy treat recipe I was looking for, I decided to modify a recipe that I use to make omega bars (for humans) into a horse treat recipe.

Turned out these easy-peasy treats were a huge hit with the horses (even Winnie the black lab thought they were pretty fantastic). My taste testers inhaled them so quick it was tricky getting good pics-nobody had any complaints about doing retakes-haha.

I used pears for the base of the treats because I had some that needed to be eaten up and my horse loves them. If you have a horse that does better with carrots, apples, or bananas you can substitute as needed.

I zipped coconut oil, honey, pears, and cinnamon through the food processor till they were the consistency of thick applesauce.

Then bring on the shiny coat making, inflammation-fighting, heart-healthy Omega 3s by mixing in the flax seeds, chia seeds, and ground flax. Add the oats to thicken up the batter, then you’re ready to bake (the consistency should be thick enough for your spoon to stand up-if your batter turns out a little gooey you can add more ground flax or oats to thicken it up a bit).

Pour it into the pan and bake at 350 degrees for 20-30 min depending on your oven.

I cut mine into little hearts when they came out of the oven so my horse knows they are made with extra love (cue the cheesy music that plays in the background of every great horse movie ever made).

Added bonus the pears and cinnamon in the recipe made my whole house smell amazing when they came out of the oven. After they were cut, they looked so cute that one of the humans in at my house taste tested them and said they were pretty good, too.

1 heaping tablespoon coconut oil*
1 tablespoon honey
3 small pears (you can use two ripe bananas, carrots, or apples if pears aren’t your horse’s fav)
1 teaspoon cinnamon (Penzey’s makes the best cinnamon blend ever)*
2 tablespoons golden flax
3 tablespoons chia seeds*
2 tablespoons ground flax*
1 cup quick oats

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line pan with parchment paper. I used an 8×10 pan-if your horse likes treats that are crunchier you can use a bigger pan and spread the bars out thinner when you bake them.

In a food processor or blender put coconut oil, honey, cinnamon, and pears (it works best if you cut them in half and core them), blend 1 minute. Pour pear mixture into a bowl, then stir in flax seeds, chia seeds, ground flax, and oats until well combined.

Pour mixture into lined pan and bake for 25 minutes.
After removing from the oven you can cut them out with cookie cutters or just cut them into bite-sized squares.

*One thing to note is that these are made with fresh fruit so it’s best to feed them up within a few days or to refrigerate/freeze them.

I hope you have fun making these and your horse feels the love!

Insightfully,

Becky
