Make your own homemade superfood horse treats Dehydrated Almond Berry Bites
These homemade horse treats have Superfood written all over them.
Before you roll your eyes at the thought of some trendy superfood horse treats, just hear me out… These are the real deal, not like when ladies magazines call milk a superfood. Being loaded with healthy nuts and berries you can feel great about feeding your horse these power-packed treats. As an added bonus they will make your house smell amazing when they are drying.
Magic berries you say? Yup. The base of these treats is blueberries (I used frozen ones) and goji berries*, which means they contain with over 30 vitamins and minerals, antioxidants and vitamin C (horses need a ton of both). The goji berries and almonds also provide an excellent amino acid profile so if you’re one that is always looking to sneak in extra protein these should be a go-to. Not sure where to find goji berries? I find Truvibe to be the freshest. You can grab them here*.
Adding just a touch of honey helps to keep all the ingredients sticking together. They stay chewy when their dry instead of crumbly. It also gives them just enough sweetness to bring out the yummy fruit flavors.
I’m a bit obsessed with using my food processor for everything. If you don’t have one, no big deal, you can always use a blender. By-the-way they smell amazing when you blend them up. Pure berry goodness.
As you can see I’m not very particular about them being put on the Paraflexx* sheets in a very orderly fashion. Sorry if I’m driving anyone nuts with the lack of straight lines. These can set pretty close together on the sheet as they won’t spread out as they dry.
Healthy Superfood Goodness
I took mine out while they were still slightly chewy as that’s how my horse likes her treats. You can leave them in longer if your horse like treats that are firmer. If your not sure that yours are dry enough think of how much moisture raisins typically have. They should be at least that dry to ensure they won’t go bad when you store them.
Dehydrated Almond Berry Bites
1/2 cup dried goji berries*
1 cup blueberry
1/2 cup oats
1/4 cup almonds
A drizzle of honey
Throw all the ingredients into your food processor. No food processor no worries you can use a blender or Ninja. Blend up the mixture until it is the texture of thick oatmeal. Spoon onto drying sheets on your dehydrator trays. It works best to make smaller treats about the size of a quarter. Dehydrate at 115 degrees for four hours then flip and dry another 3 hours. *Note if your horse prefers firm treats you can get them to come out more crisp by ditching the drying sheet 1/2 way through and just flipping them onto the trays to dry the rest of the way. *Note drying times may vary based on the type of dehydrator you use and how much stuff you are drying at once so it’s best to check them every few hours. The extras can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 months.

This recipe makes about one tray in the dehydrator so if you want to make more simply double or triple the recipe. Or it works great to mix and match with these other recipes. Horses love variety.
