I installed stall skins in my two stall barn in 2009. My horses and donkeys have free access to come and go in these stalls year round. I love them, and with the exception of a couple small holes they are still in good shape after all these years. I don't stall any of my animals they use them every day to get away from the heat and bugs in the summer and to stay warm and dry in winter. i cover the flooring with sawdust. I find the stalls easy to clean and maintain.

We have had stall savers for about a year and a half now. When we first installed them they worked great. My husband followed the directions of the manufacturer for the base and we installed drainage under the stalls of our new barn. Unfortunately, the urine doesn't seem to be going through anymore. We have power washed the stall saver and that did not help. The ammonia smell in my new barn is becoming unbearable. Not to mention that there are small holes all through the first stall saver that we put down. I am really disappointed with this product. We had very high hopes for using less shavings and having a good smelling barn. That is not the case, just a short year and a half after installation. Has anyone else had these issues? Have you been successful in resolving them?

You could try cleaning it with cleaning strength vinegar or pet-safe cleaner that breaks down the residue that may be getting left behind from urine like an enzymatic cleaner. Or let it dry out good and vaccuum it off with a shop vac?

Have had these for 4 years worked great, but after awhile they will not drain where the animal pee. Lifted the mat poured water on the base ( 6" limestone with perimeter drain to sump) drains right away. Pour water on the mat and puddles no drainage, seems like the mat is clogged tried cleaning with everything and power washed it not much better. Contacted seller claims never heard of this problem before? Any ideas on how to unclog the mat.

Thanks for checking out the post and filling us in on your experiences with stall liners. I always love hearing about the set-ups that other people have tested out.

I also have used the geotextile mats and compared to anything else I have used they are great! Yes, they do clog up with the smaller shavings and dirt/mud, but I take a pressure washer with diluted pinesol every few weeks and pressure wash them....so much easier than lifting a heavy rubber mats to clean the stalls. This cleans out the pores and they drain again.
I also, currently, rarely keep my horses locked into the stalls. They come in and out at will so I typically don't use shavings.
When I have kept them in stalls for 12 hours a day to keep them from eating too much grass, I placed a small (2x4) rubber mat in front of the stall doors. They have pawed and have never broken through the fabric. I have had 6 stalls lined for 8 years and never a problem. I have had 3 run-in, 12x14 sheds lined for 4 years and never a problem and have never put any rubber in front of the doors. I have tried both the ones with texture on the top surface and the ones with no texture. I would never buy the ones with texture again as your fork will gets caught on them if you do use bedding. I dug a 3' x 6' hole in each stall, filled with rocks, gravel and topped with sand. The sand does move around, so as I am building a new barn, I will put in the stall grids to keep the sand stable this time, probably will add the rubber mulch for comfort and then the geotextile fabric. I would not go with the stable comfort setup as you really would have the same situation with the geotextile fabric if it doesn't' drain. Both situations require more shavings and more clean up. Until something better comes out I will stick with the geotextile.... Great Blog!
